5-Set Thriller: Franklin Edges Brevard in Mountain Eight Semi-final Battle

5-Set Thriller: Franklin Edges Brevard in Mountain Eight Semi-final Battle

The Brevard Blue Devils nearly pulled off one of the most thrilling comebacks of any game I’ve seen this season on Monday night, but the Franklin Panthers held on just long enough to advance in the Mountain Eight Conference tournament. Franklin took the match 3-2, surviving a gritty rally from Brevard that turned a two-set deficit into a five-set battle.

Franklin opened strong, taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-16. The Panthers’ front line controlled the pace early, with solid blocking and aggressive net play that kept Brevard on their heels. Their serve receive was sharp, and their hitters consistently found open spots in the Blue Devils’ defense.

But Brevard refused to go quietly. In the third set, the Blue Devils began to turn the tide, tightening their defense and finding rhythm on offense. Communication improved, and every player on the court seemed to elevate their focus. Their teamwork became the difference, with solid serve receive, quick transitions, and a defensive effort that kept rallies alive time and again. Brevard took the third set 25-18 and followed it up with another strong showing in the fourth, winning 25-15 to even the match and force a decisive fifth set.

The energy in the gym was electric as both teams battled for every point. The fifth set began tightly contested, but Franklin found their composure when it mattered most. With momentum swinging back their way, the Panthers pulled ahead late and clinched the set 15-8, ending the night on top.

While Franklin celebrated their advancement to face West Henderson on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., Brevard walked off the court with their heads held high. Their comeback effort showed incredible determination, unity, and heart – a performance that reflected the strength of their program.

Both squads represented their schools well in a match filled with emotion, resilience, and respect. For Franklin, the journey in the Mountain Eight continues. For Brevard, the fight they showed last night will carry forward into the playoffs.
